The optical fiber spool (10) has a self-supporting, hollow coil (12) made of optical fiber (13), which is detached from the coil from the coil interior. An operation spur (14) is arranged in the coil interior coaxial to the coil. The operation spur extends almost over the total axial length of the coil. The optical fiber is fed through an extraction opening (23) arranged at the front side of the coil. An independent claim is included for a method for manufacturing a self-supporting, hollow coil of an optical fiber spool.
