Apparatus for monitoring a human or animal subject's bodily function in vivo comprising a telecommunication device (eg a mobile phone) (1) provided with an eyepiece (7) for locating a subject's eye relative to a light source (4) and light recording means (eg a camera) (5), the apparatus being arranged to direct light into the subject's eye (8) through the pupil of the eye (8) and to record light returning through the pupil from the interior of the eye (8) and to transmit data recorded to remote analysing means (20). The apparatus may be used to monitor a substance in the subject's blood, eg the glucose levels of a diabetic.
