Alcohols are produced by the hydration of olefines containing at least three carbon atoms by treatment with an aqueous mixture of a zinc salt and an inorganic acid, preferably zinc sulphate and sulphuric acid. The reaction vessel may be made of or lined with copper, or other materials such as the metal known under the Registered Trade Mark "Monel." In examples (1) a mixture of propylene and propane containing 35 per cent of propylene is treated at 285 DEG C., and 3000 lb. pressure with an aqueous solution containing 4 per cent of ZnSO4.7H2O and 1,3 per cent of sulphuric acid; (2) a mixture of butylene and butane free from isobutylene and containing 30 per cent of butylene is treated with an aqueous solution containing 8 per cent of zinc sulphate and 4,7 per cent of sulphuric acid, at 225 DEG C., and 3000 lb. pressure. Specifications 369,216, 378,764, and 389,133 are referred to.
