The device has a set of position sensors (6), sensitive to the presence of a user (8) e.g. driver or passenger, in an area covered by a sensor sensitivity field interesting the area in a manner to control lighting and/or extinction of a set of different light sources equipping a motor vehicle and to optimally illuminate the area. The light sources are constituted by intersection headlights of front illuminating searchlights (3, 4), a direction headlamp or backup light (7) and front or rear turn signal lamp.
