The steering system has variable steering ratios (6,8), where the overall gear ratio of one steering angle of a steering wheel (1) decreases to a wheel lock angle or the local gear ratio decreases from the change in steering angle to the change in the wheel lock angle from a central position of the steering wheel to a larger steering angle. A limited steering angle area has a central position of the steering wheel, in which the speed ratio is a function of higher degree of the steering angle. An independent claim is included for a method for determining the process of the global or local steering ratio of a steering system.
