The device (1) has an exciting field control (23) including a field output (24) for controlling exciting filed produced by a field coil (25) in a generator. A voltage stabilizer is connected before a regulator (2) such that the regulator is activated by an internal clocking circuit (4). A monitoring device (3) e.g. monoflop-function device, is connected below the regulator and before the exciting field control. The monitoring device is activated by a separate clocking circuit (5). The regulator is relegated into an initial state by the monitoring device. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a generator by a regulating device.
