<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a defining and enhancing method for an image edge by carrying out a Laplacian operation based on the three directions of horizontal, vertical and diagonal. <P>SOLUTION: This type of defining and enhancing method for the edge is especially used for adjusting a luminance value in a picture element yij and uses the Laplacian operation and a Laplacian cut (Laplacian cut) in the horizontal direction, the vertical direction and in the diagonal direction.
