<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a friction material for a cast-iron rotor, capable of combining good abrasion resistance and favourable fade characteristics, and provide its manufacturing method. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The friction material, the one used for frictional engagement with a cast iron-made rotor, has vacancy formed in the inside thereof by blending ≥3 vol.% and ≤12 vol.% of a thermoplastic fiber having a fiber length of ≥3 mm and ≤12 mm into a formulation base of a non-asbestos friction material and carrying out heat treatment at a temperature of the melting point or higher of the thermoplastic fiber after the friction material is thermoformed.
