<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To release a stack of aligned paper onto the loader means without spoiling the quality of the alignment of paper. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The paper processing apparatus includes: a shift tray 202 on which paper is loaded; a rear end fence 51 and a jogger fence 53 both used for aligning paper; a pair of paper release rollers 6 for releasing the aligned paper or a stack of paper onto the shift tray 202, the pair of paper release rollers being situated on the most downstream side of the transfer direction; a paper stack transfer mechanism 600 for transferring the aligned paper or the stack of paper toward the downstream side of the transfer direction; and a release claw 52 for moving the aligned paper or the stack of paper from the upstream side of the paper stack transfer mechanism 600 to the downstream side of the paper stack transfer mechanism 600 and for releasing the paper onto the shift tray 202. The paper stack transfer means 600 applies a releasing force to the stack of paper when the release claw 52a releases the stack of aligned paper onto the shift tray 202.
