<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a display device which is free from risk of deviation in distribution of display particles and a decrease in contrast due to partitions, and to provide a display rewriting method in the display device. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The display device 2 has display particles 20 and 22 charged in a section 40 surrounded by opposed substrates 4 and 6, and partitions 8 provided between the opposed substrates 4 and 6. When a voltage is applied between the opposed substrates 4 and 6 for display rewriting to move the display particles 20 and 22 in a direction nearly perpendicular to the substrates, at least a portion of the partitions 8a shrink in the direction nearly perpendicular to the substrates 4 and 6 or are in a shrinking state. At the same time or after the display particles 20 and 22 complete the movement, the shrinking portions of the partitions 8a restore themselves.
