PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To perform communications enhanced in robustness.

SOLUTION: When information to be added to main information acquired in a main information acquisition section 1002, e.g. main information, is image data, information such as data for reproducing the image data correctly is acquired in an embedded information acquisition section 1001. Based on the information acquired in the embedded information acquisition section 1001, a pattern of subcarrier used in an OFDM modulation section 1004 when modulation is performed is determined in a subcarrier pattern determination section 1003. The OFDM modulation section 1004 modulates the main information with the subcarrier pattern thus determined. The invention is applicable to a transmitter for transmitting a program of television broadcast.
