<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To perform heat treatment in the atmosphere within a core tube by reducing time for making a processed object contact with an inner face of the core tube while achieving an oxygen-free state or extremely reducing an oxygen concentration within the core tube, and to produce calcium oxide with high purity and high quality by suppressing mixture of chrome with the calcium oxide as much as possible. <P>SOLUTION: To produce calcium oxide by heating the powdery/granular processed object W mainly composed of calcium carbonate within the rotating core tube 10, a plurality of rows of beater members 20 rolled on the inner peripheral face of the core tube 10 by rotation of the core tube 10 and applying an impact to the processed object W are arranged within the core tube 10 along the direction of the central axis Pa of the core tube 10. The circumferential speed of the inner peripheral face of the core tube 10 is set to be 0.1 m/s-0.5 m/s, and the temperature within the core tube 10 is set to be 800°C-1,200°C.
