PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a water-based coating composition which is excellent in storage stability of the coating, and with which a coating film excellent in corrosion resistance, water resistance, and so on is formed, and to provide a coating method using the composition. SOLUTION: The water-based coating composition, which is characterized in that it contains a nitrogen-containing compound (B) of 1-20 pts.mass (based on the solid content) and an anticorrosive pigment (C) containing no chromium nor lead of 1-80 pts.mass with respect to a water-based coating forming resin (A) of 100 pts.mass (based on the solid content), is applied to a metal substrate surface or to an original coating surface of the metal substrate. For the anticorrosive pigment (C), at least one is used selected from phosphate, phosphite, polyphosphate, molybdate, molybdophosphate, metaborate, and cyanamide of at least one metal selected from Mg, K, Ca, Ba, Zn, and Al.
