<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an exciter which is compact and simple in structure and is capable of extending a range of amplitude, and also to provide a speaker having a superior reproduction characteristic by using this exciter. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The speaker S1 comprises a rectangular plate-like diaphragm 20 and the exciter E2 connected to the diaphragm 20 via a driving arm 24. The exciter E2 is equipped with a strut 2, an excitation arm 13 pivotably attached to the strut 2, a planar movable coil 4 retained in a through-hole 13b formed in the excitation arm 13, tabular magnets 5 which are disposed to hold the movable coil 4 from top and bottom directions and apply a magnetic field to the movable coil 4, and a yoke 8 for holding the magnets 5. When current based on a sound signal is applied to the movable coil 4, the excitation arm 13 swings around the strut 3.
