<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a by-product-free asymmetric ether compound. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The method for producing an asymmetric ether compound (C) represented by formula (3): R<SP>1</SP>-(AO)<SB>m</SB>-O-(AO)<SB>n</SB>-R<SP>2</SP>(wherein A is a 2-4C alkylene group; m and n are each an average of 0 or an integer of 1-10; and R<SP>1</SP>and R<SP>2</SP>are each an alkyl group, an alkenyl group, a cycloalkyl group, an aryl group or an aralkyl group) includes reacting a monovalent alcohol (A1) represented by formula (1): R<SP>1</SP>-(AO)<SB>m</SB>-OH (wherein R<SP>1</SP>, A, and m are the same as defined above) with a monovalent alcohol (A2) represented by formula (2): R<SP>2</SP>-(AO)<SB>n</SB>-OH (wherein R<SP>2</SP>, A, and n are the same as defined above) in the presence of an ammonium salt (B) with a total content of a dehydration condensate between the monovalent alcohols (A1) which is a symmetric ether compound (D1) and a dehydration condensate between the monovalent alcohols (A2) which is a symmetric ether compound (D2) of not more than 30 wt.%.
