PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a sustained release material effectively gradually releasing an alkali component, and to provide a method for producing the material. SOLUTION: The sustained release material is obtained by heating and kneading a metal compound providing an aqueous solution exhibiting alkalinity, a thermoplastic resin, one or more kinds of unsaturated compounds selected from an unsaturated carboxylic acid or a derivative thereof, and an unsaturated alcohol, and a radical-generating agent. The method for producing the material is also provided. The metal compound can be selected from slaked lime, quick lime and calcium carbonate, and the thermoplastic resin can be a polyethylene-based resin. The unsaturated compound can be maleic acid or maleic anhydride. The modified biodegradable resin can be obtained by melting and kneading the sustained release material with a biodegradable resin or a resin of which the hydrolysis is accelerated by the alkali, and the biodegradable resin can preferably be a polybutylene succinate.
