<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a separator for a battery, and its manufacturing method, excellent in alkali resistance, separability, and electrolyte-solution absorptivity. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The separator for a battery contains cellulose-system extra-fine fiber with a cellulose overlay with a single-yarn fineness of 0.05 to 0.8 dtex, with the cellulose-system extra-fine fiber having fine pores on its overlay. In the manufacturing method of the separator for a battery, cellulose ester extra-fine fiber made of cellulose acetate propionate and/or cellulose acetate butyrate is put under alkali saponification to be made into nonwoven fabric containing the extra-fine fiber.
