<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To inhibit reduction in ambient light amount without using an optical member other than a light source and without extremely increasing a width and a length of the light source. Ž<P>SOLUTION: An image reading apparatus for reading an original document has a light source, which includes a sheet-shaped light-emitting section comprised of an electroluminescent element and configured to serve as a folded plane or a concave curved surface with its light-emitting surface arranged inside the folded plane or inside the concave curved surface, and a reading element which receives light from the original document to read its images while illuminating a reading position of the original document by the light source along a main-scanning direction.
