<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a steel sheet for a can having a yield strength of≥450 MPa, and in which slab corner cracking is prevented in a continuous casting stage, and to provide a method for producing the same. <P>SOLUTION: The steel sheet has a composition comprising 0.03 to 0.10% C, 0.01 to 0.5% Si, 0.001 to 0.100% P, 0.001 to 0.020% S, 0.01 to 0.10% Al and 0.005 to 0.012% N, and the balance Fe with inevitable impurities, and, in the case Mnf=Mn [mass%]-1.71×S [mass%], Mnf is 0.3 to 0.6, and its structure does not include a pearlitic structure. Suitably, the content of S is 0.001 to 0.005% and/or the content of Al is 0.01 to 0.04%. A yield strength of 450 to 470 MPa can be obtained owing to solid solution strengthening by solid solution strengthening elements such as C and N, and solid solution strengthening and crystal grain refinement strengthening by P and Mn.
