<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reading apparatus can minimize a change in image before and after scanning stop due to fluctuation of a light source by using a simple detecting means, a control means and a correcting means without having a reflection reference member having uniform reflection in a sub-scanning direction. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The image reading apparatus having for lighting two illumination lamps 2 and scanning an original document has a line memory 46 for storing the image data read by an optical reading element, wherein an original scanning operation is temporarily stopped at a time point when the residual capacity of the line memory 46 becomes not more than a predetermined quantity, and resumes the scanning when the residual capacity returns to the set value. The image reading apparatus is provided with a thermistor 80 for detecting variation in temperature of the illumination lamp 2 immediately after stopping original document scanning, a temperature detecting section 81 and a CPU 51, wherein the CPU 51 controls so as to prevent the variation in temperature during stopping the original document scanning.
