<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projection type image display device capable of displaying images by correcting defocusing during imaging properly. Ž<P>SOLUTION: This projection type image display device 1 is provided with a light source 11, an image forming element 12 for forming an image by modulating the light emitted from the light source 11 based on an image source, a projection optical system for projecting the image formed by the image forming element on a screen 30, and a focus adjusting means 15 for adjusting focus in the projection optical system. This projection type image display device 1 is also provided with a focus correcting part 24 for correcting focus in the projection optical system by driving the focus adjusting means 15 based on the information obtained from the image source.
