<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a printer capable of producing printed matter capable of being handled safely by eliminating the problem that the printed matter is spoiled due to adhesion of an adhesive exposed when a printing tape with the adhesive exposed on the rear face of a printing face after printing and other problems. Ž<P>SOLUTION: A printing method includes the steps of setting a printable maximum tape length A based on the tape width of the printing tape, rigidity based on the material and the configuration of a tape and the residual quantity of the tape (S1); determining whether a tape length L required to print input data is equal to or shorter than the maximum tape length A (S4); and invalidating input of the data to inhibit input (S5) or inhibiting printing of the data (S12) when the tape length L required to print the input data exceeds the maximum tape length A.
