<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an elevator system capable of precisely calculating a position and a speed of a car or a counter weight, and thereby safely controlling the car or the counter weight. <P>SOLUTION: This elevator system has an elevator car 12, a hoisting machine 32 for elevating the car 12 in a hoistway 11, and a counter weight 18 connected to the car 12 via a main rope 25. Also, acceleration sensors 16a, 16b for detecting the acceleration of the car 12 or the counter weight 18 are provided, and a control device 26 is connected to the acceleration sensors 16a, 16b.
