PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image scanning unit for scanning an image of a document transported by a fixedly disposed scanning means. SOLUTION: In a digital copier 1, a contact type image sensor is disposed in a state where a convex portion having a predetermined width and a predetermined height is formed for a predetermined length in a main scan direction on a flat face of contact glass 41, on which a document G is transported, and a document floating area is defined as a document scan position P until the document G being transported passes over the convex portion 70 and comes into contact with the flat face of the contact glass 41. Therefore, the document G is transported to the document scan position P in a clean state where foreign substances of a scan face of the document G are scraped away by the convex portion 70, and foreign substances are prevented from being piled up or deposited at the document scan position P, so that quality of read image is improved.
