A paper note handling apparatus (1) has a main carrier path (411) and a return carrier path (412) for interconnecting an opening (21) formed on a chassis (2) and storage sections (31) to (33), as well as a carrier section (42) to carry the paper notes, a detector section (5) arranged at a given detection position in the main carrier path (411), and a control section (25) to control the carrier section (42) according to the detection result from the detector section (5). Based on the result that the paper notes carried along the main carrier path (411) are pulled into the return carrier path (412) at a branch position, and the following paper notes are carried along the main carrier path (411) to reach the detection position, the control section (25) controls each of carriage of the paper notes on the return carrier path (412) and carriage of the paper notes on the main carrier path (411), thereby overlapping and bundling the paper notes such that specific positions on the paper notes are aligned to each other at a junction position.
