<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a video display apparatus for displaying the contents of an HDMI (high definition multimedia interface) apparatus as an external input. <P>SOLUTION: A television 1 is provided with: a broadcast receiving section 13, a signal processing section 14, a control section 15, a display section 16, an operating section 18 and an HDMI transmission/reception section 2. The HDMI transmission/reception section 2 performs transmission and reception to/from a DVD recorder 101 to obtain various information of the recorder 101. A ROM 153 in the control section 15 records a manufacturer name lookup table 158 and programs for executing the various processing 154-157. Upon receiving a request of channel switching to an apparatus having the external HDMI connected thereto, the control section 15 executes external input OSD processing 157. In this case, the HDMI transmission/reception section 2 performs communication with the DVD recorder 101 to receive a vender ID and a logical address, and the table 158 is used to convert the vender ID into a character string of a manufacturer.
