PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a microscopic image photographing apparatus, wherin an appropriate control range including a specimen is set through automatic focus adjustment, by automatically detecting the thickness of a slide glass specimen before the automatic focus adjustment is made, and to provide a photographing method and a program. SOLUTION: In synchronization with the conveyance of a slide glass 10 to a stage 9 from a slide glass accommodation unit 16, the thickness of a slide glass specimen is detected by a thickness detection unit 60.
