<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce frequency of use of a glow plug 18 as much as possible by inhibiting a drop of cylinder temperature when an engine 10 is automatically stopped, in an automatic stop device for a diesel engine automatically stopping the diesel engine 10 when prescribed automatic stop conditions are satisfied and restarting the engine 10 when prescribed restart conditions are satisfied. Ž<P>SOLUTION: In an intake valve operation control part 103 controlling operation state of an intake valve 26 by an intake valve drive means 26A, open of the intake valve 26 is inhibited in a first half period of an engine stop process from stop of fuel supply to the engine 10 to actual completion of stop of the engine 10, and open of the intake valve 26 is permitted in a second half period of the engine stop process.
