<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a vinyl alcohol-based polymer film which is excellent in mechanical characteristics, water resistance, weather resistance, and wound resistance, is free from being colored, is immersed to hardly elute, and can be utilized effectively for various kinds of uses including an optical film such as a polarizing film. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The film is formed by using a vinyl alcohol-based polymer which has a viscosity-average molecular weight of 4,000-8,000, a saponification degree of 99.50-99.97 mol%, a 1,2-glycol bond unit content of 1-1.5 mol%, wherein the aqueous solution of the vinyl alcohol-based polymer having a viscosity of 1,000 mPa s takes 50-250 min to get an increased viscosity of 20,000 mPa s at 10°C, and the aqueous PVA-based polymer solution has an optical absorption (at a measurement temperature of 20°C) of 0.02 L/g or less after corrected in concentration at a wavelength of 280 nm and 320 nm using a cell having an optical path length of 30 mm.
