<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To attain improvement in productivity of reading after maintaining image quality when reading an image while feeding a document in a sheet-through manner. Ž<P>SOLUTION: In a case where documents are continuously fed by a sheet-through type automatic document feeder, the quantity of light of an exposure lamp is monitored and shading correction is performed upon the first document. In a case where shading correction is not performed upon second and following documents, the quantity of light of the exposure lamp is also monitored each time a document is read. When a change amount equal to or more than a preset change amount is detected in the monitoring step, shading correction is performed again. When shading is not implemented, sheet-through stop for stopping feeding a document is not performed during sheet-through operation (S111) but when shading is implemented, the sheet-through stop operation is performed (S107).
