A process for production of a water-absorbing article comprising a substrate and a water-absorbent urethane resin film formed on the substrate, which comprises the coating step of applying a coating fluid to a substrate. The process is characterized in that the coating step comprises the step of feeding the coating fluid onto the surface of a horizontally conveyed substrate from nozzles placed over the substrate and that the coating fluid comprises a solid matter consisting of a mixture of a polyisocyanate with both a polyol comprising ethylene oxide units and a hydrophobic polyol and a solvent and has a solids concentration adjusted to 5 to 30mass% and a viscosity adjusted to 1 to 3mPa· s.
