To control the gas outflow from a gas generator, in a motor vehicle airbag module, a fluid is fed in at a selected time point before or during or after the ignition of the pyrotechnical action. The fluid prevents, interrupts or diminishes or enhances combustion. The fluid can be pure water or with added alcohol or salts or glycol or a glycol/water mixture. The gas generator (1-3) has a pyrotechnical stage (4) to unfold the airbag and a second independent stage (9) with a fluid reservoir (10). The fluid from the second stage is injected into the first, on sparking the ignition (11), by a piston/cylinder unit (12,13) through a foil (15) covering the openings (14) between them.
