<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a power converter which can be protected from a short circuit and can suppress an overvoltage before a switching element is failed, and is high in responsiveness. Ž<P>SOLUTION: A short-circuit determination means 5 determines the short circuit of the switching element 1 by using a second comparison means 7b when a voltage corresponding to a gate current Ig detected by a gate current detection means 4 becomes not higher than a negative reference voltage of a second reference voltage generation means 6a within a prescribed time after the voltage corresponding to the gate current Ig detected by the gate current detection means 4 becomes not lower than a positive reference voltage of a first reference voltage generation means 6a by a first comparison means 7a.
