<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve fuel consumption by improving the efficiency of power transmission in a multistage-shift planetary gear train having eight speed stages or more. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The multistage-shift planetary gear train includes an input shaft 10, an output shaft 12, and three pairs of single pinion planetary gear sets 14, 16, 18. The input shaft 10 is connected to a first carrier 28. The output shaft 12 is connected to a second ring gear 32 and a third carrier 48. A first sun gear 20 is connected to or can be connected to a second sun gear 30 while it can be locked to a stationary portion 54. A first ring gear 22 is connected to or can be connected to a third sun gear 40. The first carrier 28 can be connected to one of the third sun gear 40 and the second sun gear 30. A third ring gear 42 can be locked to the stationary portion 54. A second carrier 38 can be connected to the third sun gear 40 and the third ring gear 42, and can be locked to the stationary portion 54 without being connected to the third ring gear 42.
