<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a hydraulic auto tensioner for preventing the excessive tensile force of a belt. Ž<P>SOLUTION: A sleeve 4 is provided in a cylinder 1 filled with operating oil, the lower end of a rod 5 is slidably inserted into the sleeve to form a pressure chamber 6 in the sleeve, and a return spring 8 is incorporated between a spring seat 7 provided at the upper part of the rod and the inner bottom face of the cylinder to energize the cylinder and the rod. A check valve 15 is provided in a passage 14 making a reservoir chamber 13 formed between the cylinder and the sleeve communicate with the pressure chamber 6 for damping a pushing force when loaded on the rod. A communication passage 16 is formed in the rod to make the pressure chamber communicate with the reservoir chamber, and a relief valve 18 is incorporated in the communication passage for keeping an upper limit value for fluctuating pressure in the pressure chamber constant to prevent the excessive tensile force of the belt. A throttle is formed in the communication passage on the operating oil outlet side of the relief valve for preventing a great pressure difference between the operating oil inlet side and the operating oil outlet side of the relief valve to prevent the fluttering of a valve element 23.
