An illuminating device where a light emitting face which has uniform and high luminance for a wide range can efficiently be constituted is provided. An inner part of a back light chassis (11) arranged on a back side of a display panel (3) is divided into two in a long side direction or a short side direction. Discharge lamps (7, 8) are arranged in a divided region in parallel in a direction orthogonal to a division direction. Electrodes (7b, 8b) of one discharge lamp in the two adjacent parallel discharge lamps (7, 8) of one group are connected in common. The other electrodes (7a, 8a) are connected to an inverter circuit.
