Cholesterol-producing yeast strains and uses thereof

Disclosed is a genetically modified organism of the kingdom Fungi, that autonomously produces cholesterol from a simple carbon source, wherein the organism expresses the 7-dehydrocholesterol reductase and 3beta-hydroxysterol delta24-reductase enzymes by introducing the corresponding reductase genes into the said organism.
