New process for synthesis of proton pump inhibitors, namely Rabeprazole sodium

Disclosed is a process for the preparation of Rabeprazole sodium (2-[[[4-3-methoxy-propoxy) 3-methyl-2-pyridinyl] methyl]-sulfinyl]-1H benzimidazole sodium (see formula I). The compounds are proton pump inhibitors which can inhibit the production of stomach acid.
