The system has measurement units (11, 12) for respectively measuring a reference combustion parameter such as pressure, in a cylinder (2) and displacement characteristics of a crankshaft (5), where a piston (3) is mobile in the cylinder under an action of the crankshaft. An electronic control unit (13) sends control signals to an actuator i.e. fuel injector (14), based on data obtained from the units. The control unit has a closed control loop utilizing a value representing an output characteristic parameter e.g. fuel consumption, of an internal combustion engine, as an input set point value. An independent claim is also included for a method for controlling combustion phase in an internal combustion engine.
