PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for setting printing paper in a thermal printer which automatically loads printing paper when the printer is loaded with the printing paper, and easily removes the printing paper remaining when no paper is provided. SOLUTION: It is taken into account that a first and second sensors are provided upstream and downstream of a conveyer roller for conveying printing paper in a normal and reverse directions at the loading or the removal of the printing paper. When the first sensor detects a leading edge of the printing paper, the conveyor roller starts conveying the printing paper in a second sensor direction, and when the second sensor detects the leading edge of the printing paper, the conveyor roller conveys the printing paper up to a printing section and starts printing. When the first sensor detects a terminating edge of the printing paper, the conveyor roller is reversely driven so as to reversely convey the printing paper upstream, which positions the printing paper upstream away from the printing section.
