AUTHENTICATION SERVER AND LINE SERVER

When a reader/writer (3) is connected to a modem device (1) to perform communication with an authentication server (6) by using the Internet line (5), a modem ID memory (13) stores ID inherent to the modem device (1) which has been written upon manufacturing of the modem device (1) and which cannot be rewritten thereafter, so that authentication is performed by using both of the ID inherent to the modem device and the ID of an IC card (4). Furthermore, a response to an authentication request of the authentication server (6) is transmitted to an authorized modem device (1). Thus, the modem device (1) which is generally in the ON state all the time can detect invalidity upon reception of a response to an authentication request regardless of that an authentication request-in-progress flag (14) is OFF.
