<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a transflective liquid crystal display that exhibits satisfactory display performance without the formation of a laminated structure of a solidified liquid crystal layer and an organic insulating layer which are each patterned. <P>SOLUTION: A retardation substrate includes a light-transmissive substrate 210, and a solidified liquid crystal layer 230 including a plurality of unit areas arrayed on one principal surface of the substrate 210 and having one or more openings.
