<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a tape library system which automatically identifies the presence of a tape medium in a magazine. <P>SOLUTION: When the magazine 10 is inserted into a library body 20, the position of the magazine 10 in the library body 20 is detected and the presence of a tape cartridge 11 in each slot is detected based on a result of detecting whether light incident to a light passing hole 14 passes or is blocked. In this case, when the tape cartridge 11 is housed in the slot of the magazine 10, the light incident to the light passing hole 14 is blocked by the tape cartridge 11, and otherwise when the tape cartridge 11 is not housed, the light passes through the light passing hole 14 so that a light detecting signal rs is output by a light receiving circuit 25.
