PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus capable of making effective use of ink in an ink cartridge for usual printing while preventing unnecessary ink consumption when replacing the ink cartridge, and to provide a program carried out in the image forming apparatus, and a recording medium. SOLUTION: When replacing one ink cartridge 10 whose ink is used up by image formation, a maintenance execution propriety determining section 207 determines an ink near end or an ink end on the other ink cartridge 10 determined to be improper to execute maintenance when replacing the cartridge based on the predicted required amount of ink and residual amount of ink, and a cartridge control part 212 does not perform writing or updating of used information to a memory of the ink cartridge 10.
