PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enhance the cooling performance and to reduce the weight while ensuring the mechanical strength of a rotor core against centrifugal force. SOLUTION: A permanent magnet synchronous motor comprises a stator having a stator coil on the inner circumferential side of a stator core, and a rotor having a plurality of magnetic poles formed at equally-spaced intervals in the circumferential direction by inserting permanent magnets 13 into cavities provided in a rotor core 8 in the longitudinal direction, vents for ventilation cooling provided in the longitudinal direction of the rotor core 8, and a magnetic shield board and a core retainer arranged on the opposite end faces of the rotor core in the longitudinal direction, wherein the vents of the same number as that of the poles are provided in the rotor core 8 as first vents 14 having the center at the intersection of a circle having diameter D1 and the center line L1 of the magnetic pole, and as second vents 15 having the center at the intersection of a circle having diameter D2 and the center line L2 between the magnetic poles when the circle having diameter D1 and the circle having diameter D2 larger than D1 are described around the center of rotation.
