PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To perform color conversion such that gradations are replaced with difficulty owing to nonlinearity of a color gamut in spite of linear gamut mapping carried out when at least one of color gamuts of a conversion source and a conversion destination includes a nonlinear color gamut. SOLUTION: When there is an area which is outside a color gamut of a printer and in a color gamut of a display at a predetermined hue of a Jab color space, a predetermined number of higher hues among hues greatly varying in variation degree of hue variation from peak values L<SB>0</SB>(θ) of the display color gamut at respective hues are set as gradient variation points I<SB>n</SB>, and peak values L<SB>0</SB>(I<SB>n</SB>) at those gradient variation points are smoothed by a predetermined interpolation expression. Then saturations and luminances are both linear mapped in the printer color gamut on a side of luminances higher than peak values after the smoothing while compressed, and the saturations are compressed and linearly mapped in the printer color gamut on a side of luminances lower than the peak values after the smoothing, while the luminances are held nearly constant.
