PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a silica glass fine particle, spherical and having a fine particle diameter of a nanometer level, a very narrow distribution of a particle size, a low refractive index, and capable of adjusting the refractive index; and a method for producing the same. SOLUTION: This spherical silica glass fine particle is obtained by hydrolysis and polymerization of an alkoxysilane as the raw material made into a shape of a spherical fine particle, and then firing it, which has an average particle diameter in the range of 5 nm or larger but smaller than 1,000 nm, and a refractive index of 1.35-1.44.
