PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a device and method of quickly diagnosing a failure of a decompression mechanism during engine start. SOLUTION: This failure diagnosis device diagnosing a failure of the decompression mechanism reducing cylinder compression pressure of an engine, includes: an engine speed change detection means S15 detecting a change of an engine speed at a specific crank angle during cranking in engine start; and decompression failure determination means S17, S18 determining the failure of the decompression mechanism based on the change of an engine speed.
