Provided are a crown-shaped retainer for a ball bearing, wherein the amount of grease adhering to the inner diameter section of the retainer is reduced to prevent leakage of the grease from the bearing, and a ball bearing having the retainer mounted therein. The retainer (5) is a crown-shaped retainer having pockets (11) which are circumferentially arranged in an annular body (12), which each have a portion open in one side surface of the annular body (12), and which hold balls (4) therein. Each of the pockets (11) has in the inner surface thereof recesses (16) extending from the pocket's opening edge on the inner diameter side of the retainer to the outer diameter side of the retainer.
