[Class 35] An electric motor has a rotor formed of or containing magnetic material and a stator comprising a number of electromagnets with straight cores parallel to one another and to the rotor shaft which passes centrally through the group of magnets, the rotor having poles which pass the ends of each magnet, the flux of which acts on the rotor poles through magnet surfaces which are substantially perpendicular to the rotor axis. As shown in Fig. 1, the magnetic circuit of one magnet c is completed through the two rotors band the other magnet, but in an alternative construction, Fig. 3, the circuits of the magnets are independent. The rotor in this case may comprise separate U-shaped pieces of iron secured to the shaft by their bases or to discs on the shaft. In addition to the motoring windings d supplied with continuous or alternating current through a commutating device or with alternating current directly, secondary windings e are provided on the cores to supply alternating current of another voltage, which current may be rectified by a commutator. The primary and secondary windings on the different cores may be arranged for series or parallel connection. If the machine is supplied with continuous current, a higher frequency can be obtained from the secondary windings, by providing a rotor with a large number of poles, e.g., the rotor may have the form of a toothed wheel. Fig. 7 shows a self starting motor for continuous or alternating current having six magnets and a four pole rotor. Fig. 8 shows another self-starting motor having two groups of four stator magnets and a rotor with two sets of poles, each set consisting of a pair of iron bars mounted at an angle of 45 degrees to the other pair. The machine may be used as a motor driving a toy &c., and simultaneously as a converter or transformer supplying other apparatus. |
